Uric acid is a byproduct of the process your body goes through as it breaks down purines, chemical compounds that naturally occur in your body as well as in certain foods such as red meat, seafood and alcoholic beverages. Normally, most uric acid is reabsorbed back into the body, or expelled through the kidneys. When your body produces too much uric acid (or has difficulty flushing it), hard, crystal-like deposits build up in and around the joints. This is known as gout. While this painful condition may manifest in any joint of the body, it most commonly occurs in the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe. These sharp urate crystals can cause severe flare-ups of pain, swelling, tenderness and heat in the affected joint. Symptoms tend to develop quickly and occur more often at night. They can come back and increase in frequency if the underlying condition is not treated properly. What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. Is It a Wart or a Corn?

Corns and warts are two similar looking skin growths that can crop up on the feet. A wart is a fleshy growth on the foot caused by a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The warts tend to have a rough, grainy texture, with small black dots appearing in the center. Warts can grow by themselves or in clusters. What Can Cause Hammertoe?

Hammertoe is a deformity of one or more of the little toes in which the toe is bent downward at the middle joint, creating a hammer-like shape. This condition can be painful, make your toe joints stiff, swollen and rigid, and lead to corns, calluses, and inflammation on the affected toe. Hammertoe is thought to be caused by frequently wearing ill-fitting shoes. These are shoes that may be too tight or too narrow in the toe area, as well as shoes with excessively high heels, which push the toes forward and into an unnatural position. Shoes are not the only potential cause of hammertoe, however. Various anatomical problems, bunions, MTP joint instability, and prior trauma to the toe can all make a hammertoe more likely. Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age

Exercises for Foot and Ankle Mobility

Keeping the feet and ankles flexible and strong can greatly reduce your risk of injury. This is particularly true if you are an athlete or frequently work out. As with any other part of your body, there are strengthening and stretching exercises that you can do to keep your feet and ankles healthy. You can stretch and soothe the soles of your feet by rolling them on a tennis ball for 30 to 60 seconds. This can be especially helpful to reduce soreness after a run or to ease plantar fasciitis pain. To stretch your calves, you may want to try doing heel drops. To do this, hold on to the railing and stand on the edge of a step so that your toes are on the step but your heels are dangling over the edge. Rise up on your tippy toes, then slowly lower your heels to below the level of the stairs. Do three sets of 10. Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous one, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising and ice and rest the foot. It is advised to then see a podiatrist for help.
